Why You Should Consign Your Artwork

There are many different outlets for artists to showcase their work, but one of the most sought after is representation by a reputable art gallery. If an art gallery decides to represent an artist’s work, there are a variety of ways in which it can do so. Works by the artist can be consigned to the gallery for an allotted period of time, or the gallery can represent the artist either exclusively or geographically.

One of the major benefits to an artist of having gallery representation is the promotional opportunities the gallery can provide to the artist and their work. Galleries hold events, have a presence in the community, and often have the means to market the artist. Galleries also provide clientele that an individual artist may not have access to. When artists consign work, they provide artwork to be displayed for sale in the gallery. The consignment is for an agreed upon amount time and often coincides with a specific gallery show. Usually artists do not pay to have their work displayed. If an artwork sells, both parties are the benefactors. During the consignment period, the gallery has full right to the sale of the works in the gallery. The artist is also able to sell other works, take part in other shows, and promote themselves freely. Artists can consign artworks for group as well as solo shows, and work with the gallery to select pieces that best fit the concept of the show. Exclusive Representation

Exclusive representation is another way galleries represent artists. Galleries are often more selective with who they represent exclusively, hoping to not only find artists they believe in and appeal to their clientele, but that can also ultimately enhance the credentials of the gallery and further launch an artist’s career. For this form of representation, the gallery holds the right to the display and sell all the artist’s work. This requires collectors to purchase the artist’s work through the gallery that represents them. Exclusive representation allows the gallery to fully commit to the promotion and cultivation of the artist, where the success of the artist is also the success of the gallery.

Geographic Representation

Occasionally artists can be exclusively represented by multiple galleries, in which case representation can be exclusive within a designated region. This is called geographic exclusivity. For this form of representation, the gallery has the rights to the display and sell of the artist’s work as long as it is within the gallery’s geographic region. This allows artists the opportunity to work with multiple galleries and to be exposed to a wider clientele. Geographic exclusivity can help artists become nationally or even internationally collected. Galleries who have geographic exclusivity with an artist ultimately benefit when their represented artists are able to reach a larger audience.
